As many of you know, the 12 Bar Club is closing in January, a casualty of the Tottenham Court Road area’s “redevelopment”. It’s probably worth knowing that the company in charge of the project – Consolidated – is the one that “regenerated” the old Marquee Club site into a tasteless restaurant bar and a bunch of loft apartments that sold for “record-breaking prices”. (Thanks for your part in the city’s current property price crisis.) To Consolidated, Denmark Street is a “run-down corner of London”. The developer touts lame, deluded plans to turn it into “the equivalent of New York’s Times Square”. (Why? Isn’t New York a bit rubbish?) Consolidated is openly excited at the prospect of “gigantic advertising screens”. This can’t be good. Name me a normal person who finds adverts for Gap or whatever a vital component of a city’s identity. Consolidated is also going to put in a “sky bar”. I thought a “sky bar” was only for douches. Does this mean that Consolidated is acting in the specific interests of douches? Consolidated is going to give us “an interactive music museum”, whatever that means – is that… like a phone app? – and for that privilege it will take from the city actual pieces of its music history..
