internet chatter

me: do you think happy people are inauthentic?
friend: yes, I do think so, because happiness does not exist
friend: and its not personal opinion, it is scientifically proved
friend: its all an illusion like when u are on drugs
me: so be on drugs all the time then. what is so great about reality or scientific proof?
me: most people are at the very least on caffeine and sugar (which imho could be classified as a drug)
me: people are by nature addictive
me: religion and other ideologies (eg atheism, vegetarianism, communism, neoliberalism, liberal humanitarianism, Right, Left, avante garde, celebrity worship, internet , anarchism, violence etc etc) take advantage of humans' inherently addictive nature..

tomaz salumun

Yesterday I saw the feathers of Montezuma
and how he longed for his ruin, for some foreign
god to drink up his soul. The Empire is eternal.
Eternal are the mirrors. The water evaporates,
only the gaze remains. Who hoards it up?
A chariot with a golden shaft –
I’m not that yellow fruit.
I’m not that mob staggering from the Coronation.
I ate the ticket to the Anthropological Museum
while I spoke to a tourist,
while I kept looking at you.

sabbatai zevi

'... Sperber wrote about Sabbatai Zevi, the false messiah of the seventeenth century, and his misguided Jewish followers. This, surely, was no casual interest. Sperber and his fellow Communists, whether they knew it or not, sat squarely in a tradition of Jewish error. They were benighted adherents to false idols and mistaken messiahs, wanderers from the path of truth. In the end, he suggests, it is wiser to abandon all heartwarming certainties in favor of a lonely skepticism.'

Dear Ahmed 4

'When we observe people, with their huge differences in natural talents, character, Behaviour and speech, we realize that what is given to us as “realty” is in fact “imagination”; and, from these same huge differences, we infer that there are two types of imagination: that of ordinary people, common to all; and an other type of imagination proper to a certain Euripides, Socrates or Plato. The latter is "creative imagination". Classical theatre transmits this message perfectly, through speech. That’s why we are so fascinated by Shakespeare.'

OK I have to disagree with you here. I personally do not believe that the cradle of Western civilisation was in ancient Greece. This is a subtle undermining of the huge diversity of cultures that have combined to form Western civilisation and a convenient way for the rich and powerful (and their acolytes) to excuse themselves from guilt / responsibility to numerous atrocities past and present.

Imagination, imho, cannot be separated into two groups. Nothing as esoteric, abstract and infinite as imagination could be so conveniently separated.

Dear Ahmed 3

'Discussing one's ideas with others helps us  understand them better, reveals theirs weaknesses and makes us learn new things, or better, new ways of thinking.'

I totally agree. In fact, I'd go as far as to say in a true conversation (not a monologue waiting to continue) the two or more participants in it go on an unexpected journey, impossible without the free, open participation of the protagonists.

Dear Ahmed 2

'Indeed, philosophy interest few people; most consider it as a way to vent one’s knowledge and demonstrate one’s superiority over others, so they don't like discussing it.'

I think that is often what philosophy is but that would be the logical, rational, empirical, moral side of it interests me little.

I once said about John Coltrane that he wasn't trying to break out of his skin but out of his skeleton. This mode of thinking is where metaphysics comes in.

It doesn't provide answers but more questions and thus reconnects us with the mystery of being and existence. In effect, we become children again, looking at things with wonder. Metaphysics, also for these reasons, is dismissed by atheists and orthodox scientists as pointless.

Dear Ahmed

Dear Ahmed,

Hope you are well and feeling happy and inspired.

I am shocked to see our correspondance stalled for almost five years. Your email has been in the back of my mind during this time and I am happy to say I find myself in a time and space where I can at least attempt to answer some of your points fully.

'I am used to writing in French'

Unlike many of my fellow Brits I am a Francophile and have huge respect for the antiantiintellectualism present in your culture. Language reflects culture which reflects the collective personalities (or creative imaginations) of the people who use it.

France has a rich history of thinkers including some of my personal favorites (pre-Communist Sartre, Bachelard, Debord, Baudrillard, Cendrars..) I posit that English is relatively weak in communicating the concepts these individuals did for a myriad of cultural factors. In translation into English, these thinkers' writing exists in a space where science and poetry meet - a space harder to find in the English language.

I think some users of English (Bukowski, Leonard Cohen up to and including present day comedians such as Chris Rock, Louis CK and Russell Brand - who use their special status to elucidate what those in positions of what is traditionally thought of as 'real power' cannot) transcend the language's shortcomings by using creative minimalism rather than creative verbosity. Perhaps you could bear this in mind as you struggle to communicate your thinking in English?

I'm going to send this message now as my laptop is unruly and nearly deleted the message.

travis lee street on quality v quantity

We’ve seen a staggering increase in the amount of data being shared and created on the internet. This phenomenon has even been described as a ‘Sharepocalypse’ or massive information overload. This is the result of millions of pieces of content being shared billions of times per month, which has led many to speculate on whether there is a ‘choice overload’, such as Sheena Iyengar has described in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2000. But I don’t see this as being the major problem that we are facing today, rather the main focal point of this post will skim over the points of the dissemination of information and rather look at the information itself, namely whether the information being shared is of pertinent, or a qualitative nature or rather of a more temporal, quantitative nature- that of information being shared for sharing’s sake.
I can pre-empt this discourse by describing my own experiences with this medium. My first venture into the realms of the internet being in 1996 on the then popular Lycos Angelfire, and my first website; a gaming fan page that shared cheats to Gameboy games. Although I didn’t create the cheats or the images hosted on the website, I still an urge to share the information with others and as a result, find personal satisfaction in my endeavours. The second stage of my experience on the internet can be summed up nearly a decade later, when I created a Livejournal in which I would post bi-weekly, grandiose journal entries about my recent activities, thus making the transition from content sharer to content creator. This was the beginning of a cyclical relationship that I still find myself caught up in today, that of sharing and creating.

atheism seems to me to be inverse religion, thus similarly vulnerable to dogmatic behavior patterns..

i'm not comfortable with agnosticism nor liberal humanism per se. the media is profit driven on all sides of the spectrum. broadly speaking the left sells an internal monologue of outrage and guilt whilst the right sells an internal monologue of outrage, fear and hatred. i take solace in outspoken free thinking individuals such as (inevitably) russell brand, azaelia banks, chris rock, sarah silverman, iain sinclair etc etc. also i find certain intellectual or pseudointellectual movements retain their power through changing times such as neuroscience, quantum physics, postmodernism, media analysis, situationism, animism, mysticism, psychogeography, scholarly reinterpretations of 'spiritual' texts, abstract art, art brut, experimental media and music, avante garde etc etc. imo what was extreme left is now the middle ground for anybody sane. my beliefs do not really include moral instruction of any kind however tbh

Artificial Intelligence

This is about a poem you will never see.

In the first stanza a line between poem and you is severed.

The figure eight scrollwork is a body out of thin air.

Pathos injected through the needle of a resilient patient.

Which represents the poet’s computer that has crashed.

Replacement: an overturned semi on a two lane road.

A thin stretch of highway.

People in their blocked cars listen to programs.

This is about how programs wear thin.

A downward funnel that curls up into nautili.

There is white asphalt and shells.

Asphalt is the accumulated same few meters overlapping.

Two lanes in the beginning are now only countless shells.

This is about how language is an endangered highway.

Shells hiding their true nature.

We, ourselves, crashing.

The image of numbers storming our eyelids.

As many of you know, the 12 Bar Club is closing in January, a casualty of the Tottenham Court Road area’s “redevelopment”. It’s probably worth knowing that the company in charge of the project – Consolidated – is the one that “regenerated” the old Marquee Club site into a tasteless restaurant bar and a bunch of loft apartments that sold for “record-breaking prices”. (Thanks for your part in the city’s current property price crisis.) To Consolidated, Denmark Street is a “run-down corner of London”. The developer touts lame, deluded plans to turn it into “the equivalent of New York’s Times Square”. (Why? Isn’t New York a bit rubbish?) Consolidated is openly excited at the prospect of “gigantic advertising screens”. This can’t be good. Name me a normal person who finds adverts for Gap or whatever a vital component of a city’s identity. Consolidated is also going to put in a “sky bar”. I thought a “sky bar” was only for douches. Does this mean that Consolidated is acting in the specific interests of douches? Consolidated is going to give us “an interactive music museum”, whatever that means – is that… like a phone app? – and for that privilege it will take from the city actual pieces of its music history..

electricity in antigua

our joy is from the universe, the waves' rhythm s a mystery, we find a palm tree in our inland empire,
electricity comes from other planets, wood gold, lighthouse for the damned
in the bedroom from 2001, walk softly, lions let us pass..
strong men show us peace, weak men cry, head turned down, strong women fly and laugh and wrestle with their conscience while their weaker sisters manuever and babble..
read mcluhan and baudrillard and edward debono,
watch picasso, basquiat, dubuffet, saatchi, the others
when you read, open it at a random page
when you watch, use a random part of your brain
get underwater when you can
don't listen to the bitter
find the joyful as your instinct will guide you
